After They Leave the Studio

Speakers: Oren Jacob, Jim Capobianco, Bobby Rubio, Moderator: Darrien Gipson

For passionate artists, the creativity continues to drive them long after they clock out of their day jobs. In some cases, spare-time efforts can even turn into big business. Twitter itself is an example of a minor side project that became a major success story–not to mention a billion-dollar enterprise.

In this panel discussion, creators of some of the most beloved animated features in history will show off their personal artistic and storytelling projects that are generating critical acclaim. Projects and people include:

  • Oren Jacob and the indie film, “Ready, Set, Bag!”
  • Jim Capobianco and the hand-animated short film “Leonardo”
  • Bobby Rubio and the comic books “4 Gun Conclusion” and “Alcatraz High”
  • More to come!

7:30pm

William Shatner Guest Appearance

William Shatner himself will be joining us at the Tweet House in conjunction with the MyOuterSpace.com Launch Party and live webcast.

8:00pm – 8:30pm

Live Band Performance: Funeral Party

Los Angeles-based Funeral Party formed late one night while drinking in a park in Whittier, California, a sleepy suburb that sits on the outskirts of Los Angeles County. Chad Elliott, James Torres, and Kimo Kauhola formed Funeral Party as a means of escaping a nowhere town set amidst a cultural wasteland.

The moroseness evoked by their moniker is undermined by Funeral Party’s debut album, Golden Age of Knowhere, an up-tempo powerhouse that weaves a barrage of aggressively catchy melodies, propulsive basslines, and relentless rhythms with Elliott’s raw, throaty vocals and the band’s shouty group sing-alongs. The album opens with a triad of punchy tracks: “New York City Moves To The Sound of L.A.,” “Carwars,” and first U.S. single “Finale.”

8:30pm – 9:00pm

Tweet Us: How (and Why) The Stars and Studios Like to Engage With Fans on Twitter

Ryan Penagos, editor at Marvel.com, and Tyrese Gibson, actor from Transformers and creator of the Mayhem comic, will talk about why they are on Twitter, and how they use this new platform to connect and engage with their fans.

9:00pm – 9:30pm

Live Band Performance: Heavy Young Heathens

“There’s a great crop of new young bands ready to explode out of LA and Heavy Young Heathens are right there with the best”
Nic Harcourt/Music Editor, L.A Times Magazine/KCRW DJ

New e.p. MAKE ROOM FOR THE YOUTH pairs Heavy Young Heathens with producer JP Bowersock (The Strokes, Julian Casablancas) and Mixer Ryan Hewitt (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Avett Brothers Johnny Cash). The pairing seemed to be the perfect match. Upon release in April of 2010, the 5-song e.p. debuted Top 5 on the FMQB Specialty Radio Charts and Top 20 on the Mediaguide Radio Charts.
