Film Promotion in the Age of Twitter: Building A Fan Base Through Social Media
It’s no secret that social media is driving a fundamental change in the way films are marketed and how fans are engaged. Twitter and other Social Media tools have moved from experimental marketing to the epicenter of many organizational outreach strategies.
Thanks to the explosion of online social platforms, independent filmmakers working on tight budgets now have an inexpensive yet effective way to perform both global and hyper-targeted outreach. They’re not alone. The big studios are leveraging the platform as well. AdAge recently named Twitter as their “campaign-management tool of choice.”
Actors and talent are leading the vanguard, and many are using Twitter to activate their fan base in major ways. Pee Wee Herman (who launched his Twitter presence at a Tweet House event) used his follower base to drive buzz for his Broadway show. As Variety said, it is this “hands-on approach that creates a feeling of ‘engagement’ — the holy grail of new-media marketing.”
In this session, our panel of experts will discuss the pros and cons of different Twitter marketing strategies, relate real-world examples of companies that are using social media to raise film awareness, and show the tools that can be used to effectively listen, measure, and respond.
